The city of Nimes is 2,000 years old and was built
on a spring discovered by the roman Nemauses.
There are so many facets to this ancient
and most southerly region. Rich in history, a wealth
of sites are waiting to be explored. From the magnificent
walled town of Carcassonne to the stunning Roman city
of Nîmes with it's world famous Roman Gladiator
Arena (Arènes) and Maison Carrée
with the nearby Pont du Gard being the tallest
Roman aquaduct in the world. South of Nîmes is
the wildlife haven of the Camargue with it's
famous white horses, pink flamingos and not forgetting
the torros! A short drive north is the spectacular
Cévennes mountain range and the breathtaking
Tarn gorge.
The landscape varies from the dramatic scenery of the
Pyrénées, ideal for walking and skiing,
to the soft sandy beaches of the Mediterranean.
There really is something for everyone in Languedoc-Roussillon
and the enviable climate of more than 300 days of sunshine
a year has made it the biggest wine producing region
in the country.
